Illegal Trade With China Triggering Insurgency in Mozambique? | Firstpost Africa
Illicit trade with China is fuelling insurgency in the African nation of Mozambique. Smuggling of timber from Mozambique to China, estimated to be worth $23 million a year, is helping fund the Islamist insurgency Cabo Delgado in the north of the country. Insurgent controlled areas of Mozambique have been a breeding ground for illegal trade and for criminal gangs. Mozambique was reportedly China's top African supplier of rosewood in 2023, providing 20,000 tonnes worth $11.7 million. Last week, at least 100 insurgents launched an attack in Cabo Delgado's Macomia. There has been an increase in insurgent attacks in Mozambique since January. Watch this video for details.

This is really sad, some of Mozambique forests consists of century’s old hard wood trees.. this will inevitably cause desertification in the region

Having visited China, I saw first hand how they nurture their trees even along the road but they took delight in deforesting Africa. When power changes hands china will be the worst compared to the exploitation of Europe
