How to Clean Up the World’s Dirtiest Industry | Joojin Kim | TED

10/10/2026 · TED

Descrição

Climate strategist Joojin Kim spent years convincing banks across South Korea to stop funding coal, and it worked. Now he's aiming that same playbook at a new target: maritime shipping, a hidden engine of the global economy — and one of the world's dirtiest industries. He breaks down how the whole system converges in one place and why redirecting finance could transform it into a driver of a clean economy worldwide. (This ambitious idea is part of The Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change.) (Recorded at TED2026 on April 15, 2026)

The dirtiest industry is the building industry. The amount of insulating foams, plastic and concrete used and getting those materials to the building site is insane. And how much just gets burried in the ground while building.

Unless someone can make green hydrogen cheaper than it can be made from natural gas this is not going to work out well.

'Clean Industry' is an oxymoron. There IS NO CLEAN INDUSTRY. All industrial activity produces a variety of byproducts - the worst one being HEAT. When we can do constructive things without producing heat as a byproduct, we can then have the beginning of 'clean industry'. Physicists, GET CLEVER.

This sounds very promising. I’m glad someone is applying their knowledge and skills to actively turn things around for the better, for all of us. It should be a priority for politicians as well, but it’s clear enough whose interest they put first. Thank you for investing time and resources into doing the right thing and spreading the message to give us hope

Reduce demand by living simply. Everything will settle down
