Massive reserves were found off the coast of Cabo Delgado in 2010, promising to reshape the national economy. Yet, before the first dollar of profit arrived, billions were already missing. This story details how corruption derailed one of the most significant opportunities in African geopolitics.
The TotalEnergies-led Mozambique LNG project was suspended under force majeure in 2021. However, force majeure was lifted in November 2025, and the project officially restarted in January 2026, targeting first LNG in 2029.
Mozambique had already begun exporting LNG through Eni’s offshore Coral South project in November 2022.
The central question remains: will Mozambique’s natural-gas wealth improve life for ordinary citizens—or will corruption, conflict and weak governance capture the benefits?
