Dimitri Tsafendas and the Assassination of Hendrik Verwoerd | A Contested History

15/09/2026 · Cloochey Foundation

Descrição

On September 6, 1966, parliamentary messenger Dimitri Tsafendas stabbed South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd inside Parliament in Cape Town. Verwoerd, widely known as a leading architect of apartheid, died at the scene.

Tsafendas was born in Portuguese Mozambique to a Greek father and a mixed-race Mozambican mother. Although apartheid authorities legally classified him as white, he was not simply a white South African.

He was declared mentally unfit to stand trial and remained imprisoned or institutionalized until his death in 1999. Historians continue to debate whether his actions resulted from mental illness, political opposition to apartheid, or both.
