Cyclone Gezani Kills 36 in Madagascar: 300,000 Affected as Storm Heads Toward Mozambique

Cyclone Gezani has claimed at least 36 lives in Madagascar, with six people still missing and nearly 300,000 affected, according to the country’s disaster management office. Packing sustained winds of 185 kph and gusts up to 270 kph, the storm ripped off roofs, toppled trees, and knocked out power across large parts of the island nation. Rescue and clean-up operations are ongoing in hard-hit areas including Toamasina.

Gezani is now tracking south toward Mozambique’s coast, raising fresh concerns in the region. The cyclone is the second major storm to strike Madagascar in less than two weeks, following Cyclone Fytia, which killed 14 and displaced over 31,000 people. With back-to-back extreme weather events, questions are mounting over preparedness, climate resilience, and the growing intensity of the Indian Ocean cyclone season.
