Cyclone Gezani Destroys Madagascar’s 2nd Largest City 🇲🇬 | EU Rebukes Uganda Over Rights Abuses 🇺🇬

Cyclone Gezani has devastated Toamasina, Madagascar’s second-largest city, killing at least 31 people and destroying an estimated 75% of the port city as the nation struggles to recover from its second major cyclone in two weeks . According to President Michael Randrianirina, the scale of destruction “exceeds Madagascar’s capabilities alone,” with winds reaching 250km/h, over 250,400 homes damaged, and 6,870 people displaced across 28 evacuation sites .

Meanwhile in Uganda, the European Parliament has adopted a strongly-worded resolution condemning human rights violations following the January 15, 2026 elections. MEPs passed the resolution with 514 votes in favour, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) and veteran opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye, who remain arbitrarily detained . The resolution denounces election-related violence, a nationwide internet blackout, widespread intimidation, and the killing of NUP supporter Mesach Okello, while urging Uganda to cease military trials against civilians and disclose the whereabouts of missing persons .
