City Council approves $9M grant for Mobile's public waterfront project Brookley by the Bay - NBC 15

Plans for a new waterfront park in Mobile are moving forward after the City Council approved a $9 million grant Wednesday to help fund the next phase of Brookley by the Bay.

The $9 million in funding comes from the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act, also known as GOMESA, and will support the park’s Southern Activation Zone, Phase 1B.

The approval comes after questions last week about how the city would cover its $5 million contribution to the project. District 4 Councilman Ben Reynolds requested additional information about the source of the funding, delaying the approval.

On Wednesday, city officials said the city’s $5 million contribution would come from capital funds, addressing concerns about how the city would pay its share.

The funding will help advance the next phase of the planned waterfront park as the city continues its efforts to develop Brookley by the Bay into a destination for the community.
