This underwater forest is real. Nearly 60,000 years ago, bald cypress trees grew on dry land near a prehistoric river along what is now the Gulf Coast. As sea levels rose, the coastline moved inland and the fallen trees became buried beneath layers of peat, sand, and sediment, which helped preserve them for tens of thousands of years. Today, the remains lie roughly 13 km (8 miles) south of Gulf Shores, Alabama, beneath the Gulf of Mexico. Powerful storms later scoured away some of the seafloor sediment and exposed sections of the ancient forest. Scientists are now studying the wood, marine organisms, and microbes living there because they may reveal clues about past environments and even potential compounds useful for medicine and biotechnology.
