A brutal cyclone devastated Madagascar. The situation in Toamasina deteriorated rapidly.
Descrição
Brutal.
Cyclone Gezani in Madagascar.
Take care.
The situation in Toamasina suddenly worsened early tonight.
Toamasina, a city of nearly 330,000 inhabitants and Madagascar's second-largest and main port, was hit directly by Cyclone Gezani early this afternoon and continued into the early evening.
Tropical Cyclone "GEZANI," a Category 3 tropical storm, approached landfall on the island of Madagascar in East Africa, with maximum sustained winds of 110 knots and moving westward.
Cyclone Gezani became the first truly alarming cyclone to make landfall in 2026 when it made direct landfall on Toamasina at peak intensity, marking the first time the city has been hit by a Category 3+ storm since the infamous Category 5 Geralda in 1994.
Local authorities are urging residents to take the situation seriously.
Sea travel is strongly discouraged, and fishing is prohibited for everyone's safety.
Be prepared for damaging winds, flooding, and landslides.
Follow official guidance for your safety!
The second wave of storms appears to be more powerful than the first.
Serious damage and impacts are likely to continue.
According to meteorological services, a respite of about an hour is expected from the first cyclone.
This is likely to coincide with the passage of the eye of the cyclone.
This temporary respite will be followed by the return of cyclonic conditions, characterized by strong winds and heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding and property damage.
Average wind speeds are expected to reach 180 km/h, with gusts of up to 250 km/h near the center of the system. The cyclone is moving westward at about 16 km/h.
After passing Madagascar, Gezani is expected to gradually weaken before re-emerging over the Mozambique Channel on Wednesday.
The cyclone warning remains unchanged.
Red alerts remain in effect in some areas, due to imminent danger, such as in Analanjirofo, Atsinanana, Alaotra Mangoro, Analamanga, and Betsiboka.
