Descrição
CYCLONE Idai killed more than 1,000 people while ripping through Mozambique and destroying thousands of homes, the country's leader claims.
President Filipe Nyusi's claim comes after the Red Cross revealed 90 per cent of the entire port city of Beira has been wiped out by the devastating cyclone.
Four days since the massive cyclone struck, Nyusi said it had caused mass devastation and predicted the death toll would leap from the current 84 in Mozambique.
He said: "It is a real disaster of great proportions.”
It has been confirmed to have killed a total of 215 people so far, according to the Red Cross.
The Mozambique president made his chilling prediction during a radio interview, after he flew over Beira, and claimed to have seen bodies floating in the water.
The Red Cross said that 90 per cent of Beira, a city of 500,000, had been destroyed or damaged.
