Santa Monica Beach Plank Walk Collapses Following Hurricane Marie Rainfall

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Monday, September 7, 2026 — A section of the wooden plank walk at the end of Bay Street on Santa Monica Beach collapsed Monday after stormwater runoff carved a channel through the sand, flooding portions of the beach during the Labor Day holiday.

The damage occurred near the Pico storm drain, where runoff flowing toward the Pacific cut through the beach and undermined sections of the wooden walkway. Portions of the plank walk buckled and dropped into the newly formed channel, leaving sections uneven and impassable.

Yellow caution tape was placed around the damaged area, and pedestrians were directed to detour across the sand around the collapsed section.

The flooding followed a wet Labor Day weekend as moisture associated with Hurricane Marie brought rain, thunderstorms and unusually humid conditions to Southern California. Marie remained hundreds of miles offshore and did not make landfall in California, but the system supplied tropical moisture and generated a significant southerly swell along the coast. By Monday afternoon, Marie had weakened to a tropical storm and was approximately 650 nautical miles southwest of Los Angeles, according to the National Weather Service.

Additional flooding was visible around the Santa Monica Pier, where standing and flowing water covered sections of the beach and temporary detour signs were positioned near affected areas.

The National Weather Service maintained both a Coastal Flood Advisory and High Surf Advisory for Santa Monica through 11 p.m. Tuesday, as a significant southerly swell continued to produce hazardous beach conditions. Forecasters said isolated showers could also continue at times through Tuesday.

By Monday evening, skies began clearing over Santa Monica, bringing periods of sunshine and a rainbow before sunset, while evidence of the weekend's storm remained along the shoreline.

Santa Monica Closeup documented the flooding and damage at Santa Monica Beach as residents and Labor Day visitors navigated around the affected sections of the plank walk.

Stormwater runoff carved through Santa Monica Beach on Labor Day, undermining and collapsing sections of the wooden plank walk near Bay Street. Flooding was also visible around the Santa Monica Pier. What did conditions look like where you were during the storm?

Appreciate you documenting this for people to see

As a former resident of SM for 25 years, I have never seen anything like this before specially at the runoff location. Then seeing videos here of the damages in Malibu, Long Beach peninsula, Laguna Beach, etc. But sadly this is just the beginning. Climate scientists have been talking all year that the west coast is in for El Niño weather for 4 years in a row through 2030. And people STILL think climate change does not exist.

Good catch of rainbow at about 8:00 and sunset at the end!
