Why Local Communities Are The Key To Climate Adaptation
Descrição
In Mozambique, local governments and communities live with the daily consequences of floods, cyclones and drought.
They are rarely the ones who receive the resources to respond.
☀️ UNCDF's Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility — LoCAL — changes that. Climate finance is channelled directly to local governments as grants, delivered through national systems, to cover the additional costs of building infrastructure that can withstand future shocks.
The process starts with communities. They identify the priorities. Local governments lead the procurement.
📍 In Gaza and Inhambane provinces, that process led communities to choose reinforced maternity centres, clinics, schools and water infrastructure — the essential services most at risk when the next cyclone or flood arrives.
🤝 Since 2014, Belgium has invested nearly $12 million through LoCAL in Mozambique. This is what locally led climate adaptation looks like when the resources actually reach the people who need them most.
