Why Do U.S. & Russian Fighter Jets Have Different Exhaust Flame Colors?

Descrição

Why does one fighter jet produce a bright orange flame while another looks blue or almost invisible? 🔥✈️

The difference can come from factors like afterburner conditions, fuel-air mixing, engine design, temperature, and camera exposure. It doesn't simply mean one jet has a “hotter” engine than the other.

U.S. and Russian fighter jets use different engine designs, creating some fascinating differences in their exhaust signatures.

As a former F-16 F110-GE-100 jet engine mechanic this is complete nonsense...when I trimmed engines we counted the "cones" in the exhaust and they were blue

in conclusion, different design, different jet tail flame

Higher temperature also means shorter engine life length and higher visibility in infrared.

Nothing but massive respect to the brains behind its development

Photography lighting, camera settings, and specific atmospheric conditions can also make hot exhaust plumes look more vivid orange or deep blue than they appear to the naked eye.

Blue flame means burning in oxidising flame, Orange flame means burning in reducing flame. Oxidising flame burns in blue flame. Reducing flame burns with orange flame. We did it our chemistry lab. We burned substances in BUNSEN BURNER. It is design to burn in oxidising flame and reducing flame.

A higher temp exhaust means a larger IR signature. And efficiency of combustion for a gas turbine engine is inversely correlated with exhaust temperature. So, a higher bypass turbofan will convert more of the energy in the fuel to thrust, increasing overall efficiency.

Particles??? Silly me… all these years I thought that the fuel was a liquid.

I thought it was a different kind of force
