Why are Uruguay's drums a Black history story? 🥁

In 1791 Montevideo became the official slave port of the Río de la Plata. Africans rebuilt their 'nations' in meeting halls, bought freedom and drummed through the streets every 6 January. That drumming became candombe. In 1978 the dictatorship emptied the Medio Mundo tenement and scattered its families, but the rhythm survived, and today Uruguay's carnival peaks with the Llamadas drum parade.
