What Life Is Really Like Outside Mauritius’ Luxury Resorts 🇲🇺

Descrição

Mauritius is a small island country in the Indian Ocean, located east of Madagascar and off the southeastern coast of Africa. The country includes the main island of Mauritius, Rodrigues Island, and several smaller islands. Its total land area is approximately 2,040 square kilometres. Port Louis, the capital and largest city, is the country’s main administrative, commercial, and financial centre.

The islands of Mauritius were formed through volcanic activity and are known for their mountains, fertile plains, coral reefs, and beautiful coastlines. Mauritius has a tropical maritime climate, with warm summers and mild winters. Because it is located in the southwestern Indian Ocean, the country can experience tropical cyclones during the warmer months. Its natural scenery and pleasant climate make it a popular destination for international visitors.

Mauritius has a diverse history shaped by European colonisation and migration from Africa and Asia. It was controlled at different times by the Dutch, French, and British. Mauritius gained independence from the United Kingdom on 12 March 1968 and became a republic in 1992. Today, it is a parliamentary republic in which the president serves as the head of state, while the prime minister leads the government.

Mauritius has a population of approximately 1.24 million people. The country is highly multicultural, with communities whose ancestors came from India, Africa, China, and Europe. English is used for official and administrative purposes, while French and Mauritian Creole are widely spoken in everyday life. Indian languages are also spoken by parts of the population. Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam are among the country’s major religions.

Mauritius has one of the most developed and diversified economies in Africa and is classified as an upper-middle-income economy. In the past, its economy depended heavily on sugar production, but it has since expanded into tourism, textiles, financial services, information technology, food processing, and property development. Its political stability, educated workforce, and international business connections have helped it attract foreign investment.

Tourism is especially important to Mauritius because of the country’s white sandy beaches, clear lagoons, coral reefs, luxury resorts, and water activities. Visitors can also explore places such as Black River Gorges National Park, the Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel, botanical gardens, waterfalls, and historic sites. Mauritian culture is expressed through music, dance, religious festivals, crafts, and food. Sega, a traditional form of music and dance, is an important symbol of the country’s cultural identity.

Mauritius is widely recognised for its cultural diversity, natural beauty, political stability, and economic progress. However, it also faces challenges such as climate change, coastal erosion, limited natural resources, economic inequality, and dependence on international trade and tourism. Despite its small size, Mauritius has developed a strong international reputation and remains an important economic and cultural centre in the Indian Ocean region.

Mauritius is famous for luxury resorts built along some of its most beautiful coastline. But technically, hotels do not simply “own” the beach. The real controversy is often about access — especially when large resorts control most of the land directly behind the shoreline. That is exactly what I experienced. I was allowed to walk along the beach itself, but I was not allowed to enter the hotel property because I was not a paying guest. I even asked if I could simply have a coffee or eat at the restaurant, but I was still refused entry. So although the beach remained accessible, everything immediately behind it felt completely private. It is more about de facto privatization. A beach may technically remain accessible, but if the land behind it is occupied by large resorts, entrances are controlled, pathways are difficult to find, and ordinary people are made to feel that they don't belong there, the coastline can start to feel private even when the law says otherwise. And that is probably the most interesting part of my experience in Mauritius: I wasn't actually kicked off the beach. I was allowed to stay on the beach. What I was excluded from was the luxury world immediately behind it. You could literally have two people standing only metres apart: one person who has paid hundreds of dollars to stay at the resort and can freely move between the hotel, restaurant, pool and beach, and another person who can legally walk along the shoreline but may not be permitted to step into the property behind it. That is the real tension surrounding beach access in Mauritius — balancing an incredibly important luxury-tourism industry and the rights of hotels to control their properties with the principle that the country's coastline should remain accessible to Mauritians and visitors rather than gradually becoming something that only feels available to those who can afford the resorts. And importantly, this isn't only a tourist issue. For many Mauritians, access to the sea is part of everyday life, culture and national heritage, which is why disputes over fences, hotel development and coastal access generate such strong reactions. Mauritius' Law Reform Commission has described public beaches as important not only for recreation but also for communities, cultural heritage and social equity. So the controversy isn't as simple as “hotels are stealing the beaches.” The more accurate question is: If the beach remains legally public but almost everything surrounding it becomes controlled private space, how public does that beach feel in practice? PS: The thumbnail is a dramatized representation and does not reflect exactly what happened; it was created this way to bring more attention to the broader issue of beach access in Mauritius. 🇲🇺

. But honestly, this video has taught me a painful lesson: in life, we have to work hard and build ourselves financially, because sometimes people are treated differently simply because of what they can or cannot afford. It genuinely breaks my heart to see people being denied access to beautiful places because of their financial situation. What hurts even more is realizing that so many breathtaking places across the island are privately owned, leaving ordinary people unable to experience the beauty around them. It’s really heartbreaking to witness. Thank you so much, Mr. Davud, for sharing this experience with us and opening our eyes to a different reality.

The hotel is private but the beach is public. This is the reason you are allowed to walk along the beach. You are not allowed to buy coffee at the hotel because it is exclusively for those staying in these hotels.
