Descrição

French authorities searched for survivors and raced to supply aid as the death toll from Cyclone Chido's rampage through the French overseas territory of Mayotte remained unclear on Wednesday. Local officials and health workers said hundreds or even thousands could be dead from the worst storm to hit the Indian Ocean archipelago in 90 years. A hospital recorded 22 fatalities so far. The death toll from Cyclone Chido on continental Africa, where the storm hit after passing through Mayotte, jumped on Wednesday. It rose in Mozambique to 45 — from 34 a day earlier — and in Malawi to 13 from an earlier seven, according to officials. Authorities in Mozambique said more than 300 others had been injured by Chido, and 170 fishing boats had been destroyed. In Barcelona, Spain, the subway system is using regenerative braking to help power both its convoys but also recharge electric cars at street level. Regenerative brakes have been in trains for decades and are also used in some cars. The system, which also includes solar panels, provides all the energy needs of 28 of the 163 subway stations. ----------- VOA60, your world in 60 seconds.
