⚠️This is an EXTREMELY dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Catastrophic destruction is possible over the Batanes and Babuyan islands early next week due to potentially violent or super typhoon, Nando (Ragasa)⚠️
Hazards:
• Winds reaching 180 to 220km/h with possible gusts of 270km/h over the Batanes Islands, resulting in widespread severe damage or complete destruction of infrastructure.
• Rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour resulting in extreme flash flooding
• Rainfall totals of 12 to 20 inches resulting in widespread flooding
• Swell heights of 45 to 55 ft
Analysis
Tropical Storm Nando (Ragasa) is located roughly 750km east of the northern Philippines, slowly tracking west-northwest.
Over the next 24 hours, low wind shear, warms seas and excellent poleward outflow will allow for rapid intensification, and Nando is forecast to intensify into a typhoon in a few hours.
Typhoon Nando will then track towards the Luzon Strait on Monday, and is forecast to tracking westward through the Strait Monday night, while still rapidly intensifying.
Nando is forecast to reach maximum intensity at this time, and is forecast to bring catastrophic conditions to Batanes Islands Monday night.
Maximum intensity is forecast to reach 230 to 260km/h, T6 or T7 on the Devorak scale.
If Nando reaches max sustained winds of 240km/h or greater it will earn the official title of “Super Typhoon”
At the same time, typhoon conditions are also possible over the northern Luzon region of the Philippines, and southern Taiwan, due to the relatively large and extreme powerful wind field.
After tracking through the Luzon strait, Nando is forecast to gradually veer slightly southwestward as it tracks WSW over the East China Sea, towards eastern China.
Landfall in eastern China is forecast as a T5 typhoon on Tuesday night or Wednesday.
