Eric the Eel had never swam in or even SEEN a 50m olympic swimming pool. He practiced in his hotel pool. He represented Equatorial Guinea. His time is the slowest in olympic history. He did his absolute best and WON his heat race because his two oppoents false started, which disqualified them. He deserved that medal, just because he swam slowly doesn't mean he didn't win by patience. Quite possibly one of the most striking examples of "the tortoise and the hare." He went on to become the coach for the Equatorial Guinea olympic swim team 👏

I remember this guy. He got so much support that when he went home, international sponsorship constructed several 50m pools for generations of swimmers to use.

In 2006, Moussambani achieved his personal best for the 100m of 52.18 at a meet in Germany, more than 60 seconds faster than his 2000 Olympic race and only 4.34 seconds behind the world record of 47.84. ABSOLUTE. BEAST
