I was born in 1980 in Portugal and when I was very young, my father already told jokes about Samora Machel, that were kinda of making fun of him, like he was nobody, but when I grow up and understood how the colonial mind works, demoralizing the other side, I was curious enough to go learn more about this man, and I was very inspired to see how smart and brave he was. And how he send the portuguese away from Moçambique. A true hero, fighter, inteligent activist, much better than any politician in Portugal.

A story that’s rarely told is that of my grandmother, who lived near the crash site. Every time we visited her, she would recall how, around 9 p.m. that night, she heard a loud bang, followed by dogs barking frantically. A few minutes later, there was a knock at her door. When she opened it, she found a man covered in blood who told her he was President Samora Machel’s secretary. He said he had just survived the plane crash and that the president was on board. My grandmother quickly gathered the neighbors to help, but when they reached the crash site, South African soldiers had already cordoned off the area and refused to let anyone through to rescue Machel. My grandmother has since passed away, but the man who survived that night is still alive in Mozambique - there's actual footage on YouTube of her talking about this.

I was a crew chief and often prepared B737 for the presidential flight but on this occasion TU 134 was used, I observed the runway lights were on in the morning at Maputo airport when no aircraft was due and later learned that the presidents plane had crashed, the first reaction and gut feeling was the enemies had killed the son of Mozambique, Mozambicans bore the pain with dignity born from their long struggle from their oppressors- viva Mozambique, a luta continua. from Holland on Sea, UK.

As a Malawian, I can’t help but feel we failed our neighbor Mozambique and Samora Machel. In giving shelter to RENAMO fighters, we stood on the side of those who thrived on destruction. And when Machel came to us, seeking solidarity, we turned away. In that moment, we abandoned not just a neighbor but the very spirit of African unity...choosing comfort over courage and protecting those who would never protect us💔
