Descrição

The Kingdom of Mutapa (Mwene Mutapa, written "Monomotapa" by the Portuguese) ruled the northern Zimbabwe plateau and the Zambezi valley, in today's Zimbabwe and Mozambique, from the 15th century. Oral tradition credits its founding to Nyatsimba Mutota around 1430, a prince from Great Zimbabwe. Its gold and ivory reached the Indian Ocean at Sofala through Swahili and, from the 1500s, Portuguese merchants. The Jesuit Gonçalo da Silveira baptized the king in 1561 and was killed at court shortly afterwards; Francisco Barreto's 1569 expedition up the Zambezi collapsed from disease. A 1629 treaty made Mutapa a Portuguese vassal, and in the 1690s Changamire Dombo of the Rozvi drove the Portuguese off the plateau. A reduced Mutapa state survived into the 19th century. Mutota's founding story comes from oral tradition and its dates are approximate.
