SOURCES AND METHODOLOGY
The rounded 2026 totals used here come from Data Explained's reproduction of Ethnologue's ranking (29th edition), not from our direct inspection of the primary numerical table:
https://dataexplained.com/news/most-spoken-languages/
Ethnologue publisher's page (edition and first-plus-second-language definition):
https://shop.ethnologue.com/products/2026-ethnologue-200
These are estimates, not a simultaneous worldwide census. Multilingual people can be counted under more than one language, so the totals must not be added together to count individuals. The Arabic figure refers to Modern Standard Arabic, not the sum of all Arabic varieties.
PHOTOGRAPH CREDITS
Location photographs are illustrative and do not imply that a language is exclusive to a particular country or city. Photographs are cropped/reframed with text overlays and a subtle exposure gradient.

First 2 will never (in our lifetime) change. Mandarin has to have a significant drop of Han Chinese people to get lower place, which is improbable. And English is engrained into modern society and its culture so much there should be some unexpected geopolitical turnarounds to change it.
