Off the coast of Mozambique, the Vahocas have built a unique society on the remote islands of the Bazaruto archipelago. For two centuries, they have lived in these windswept, barren lands, learning to survive in perfect harmony with the sea—their only resource.

In this isolated environment, the Vahocas have developed an egalitarian way of life where fishing is more than just a means of survival—it is the foundation of their community. Every catch is carefully distributed under the watchful eyes of the elders, ensuring that all families receive their fair share. Here, mutual aid is not just a value; it is a necessity. Without it, these "sailors of the sands" could not endure.

With around 3,000 inhabitants spread across seven villages, Bazaruto is the largest of the archipelago’s five islands. Though only 15 kilometers from the mainland, it remains cut off by strong currents and shifting sandbanks. Yet for the Vahocas, this isolation is their strength—it has preserved their traditions and way of life, built on solidarity, resilience, and an unbreakable bond with the ocean.
