A significant weather event is on the horizon as Storm Goretti, designated by Meteo-France, approaches northern France, bringing with it the potential for severe weather conditions. This storm is not only expected to impact France but will also extend its reach to parts of England and Wales, where residents should prepare for powerful winds and substantial snowfall beginning Thursday night and continuing into Friday. The Met Office has proactively issued a yellow wind warning for south-west England, effective from 15:00 GMT on Thursday until 23:59, forecasting wind gusts ranging from 50 to 60 mph, with certain coastal areas possibly experiencing even stronger gusts of up to 70 mph. As the storm progresses along the English Channel on Thursday evening, it will introduce heavy rain from the south, which is anticipated to transition into snow as it meets the colder air that has settled over the UK this week. Although there are still some uncertainties in the forecast, it is likely that heavy snowfall will first occur in the hilly regions of south Wales, with rain turning to snow more widely across England and Wales throughout the night. A yellow warning has been issued from 18:00 GMT on Thursday until 12:00 on Friday, indicating that some areas may accumulate between 5 to 10 cm of snow, while higher elevations could see totals reaching up to 20 cm. The strong winds accompanying the storm may lead to drifting snow, complicating travel and outdoor activities before the rain and snow gradually move eastward on Friday.
