RR6940A Cabora Bassa Dam: Africa's Future Giant
Descrição
(7 Oct 1969) RR6940/A: MOZAMBIQUE: CABORA (CAHORA) BASSA DAM: AFRICA'S FUTURE GIANT
Work will soon begin on what will certainly be one of
the most important - and controversial - hydro-
electric schemes in Africa, the dam on the Zambezi at
Cobora (Cahora) -Bassa in Mozambique. The dam will produce
more power than the combined output of Kariba and
Aswan - and at a price that will make it probably the
cheapest electricity in the world. The town of Tete, 60
miles from the dam site, is already expanding rapidly
and looks destined to be the capital of what will be a
sort of central African Ruhr. But Cabora-Bassa's
significance is more than economic. The Portuguese,
who rule Mozambique, hope that the overall progress
it will bring will help to put an end to their five-year old
guerilla war with the Mozambique nationalists. They
are, in any case, counting on attracting up to a million
white immigrants, who will have an enormous effect
on the political and racial balance not just of
Mozambique but also of the whole of southern
Africa.

This must qualify as the most out of date video on YouTube. This dam was completed in 1974...
