Right now! Cyclone Freddy is devastating Madagascar and heading for Africa!
Descrição
Cyclone Freddy traveled about 7,200 km from the southeast Indian Ocean to Madagascar in 15 days, according to the United Kingdom Met Office.
For the first time since 2000, a cyclone moved such a long distance from the southeast to the southwest of the Indian Ocean.
At its peak, Freddy was a "super cyclone" with average winds of 220 km/h and gusts up to 320 km/h.
At the site of the cyclone's landfall in southeastern Madagascar, the wind speed was 130 km/h.
It brought less rain than feared, but still tore roofs off buildings and leveled rice fields and fruit trees.
More than 16,600 Malagasy people were affected, and about 4,500 houses were flooded or damaged.
Five dead are reported.
The French weather service said the storm had weakened, with average wind speeds down to 55 km/h.
But the storm will pick up strength from the warm Mozambique Channel as it heads towards the African mainland, the agency warned.
Cyclone Freddy is expected to make landfall between central and southern Mozambique on Friday and could reach Zimbabwe.
The Mozambican government has declared a red alert to prepare for a potential emergency.
