Rainfall threat increasing again from Cyclone Freddy - March 7, 2023

Cyclone Freddy hasn't moved much in the last 24 hours, and is still perched along the coast of Madagascar. The storm weakened a little, but has blown up a fair amount of convection in recent hours and appears to be back on track towards reaching hurricane equivalent status once again later this week. The storm will start moving northwestwards shortly, and is expected to slow down as it nears the coast of Mozambique. Latest rainfall projections now show up to 26 inches (650mm) falling near the landfall zone, east of Quelimane, with high amounts of rainfall extending well inland and affecting Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe at the weekend into next week. Whilst the track forecast in the longer range is very uncertain, the GFS once again depicts Freddy emerging again off the coast of Mozambique next week and entering an incredible third spell in the Mozambique Channel, which would demolish worldwide cyclone longevity records. Elsewhere, areas of interest persist in the Southwest Indian Ocean and Australian region, but neither are expected to form. An area of interest could develop into a cyclone next week south of Samoa, and may trouble Niue and the Cook Islands.
