PredictWind Demo: Sailing East Africa: Bazaruto Bay to Richards Bay: Bail Out in Inhaca, Maputo
This is why we needed to bail out for a few nights in Inhaca, Maputo, in Mozambique this year. Predictwind showed some variations in the 4 weather forecasts so it was not clear what we would definitely have 300 miles in to the passage, so we had to assume the worst, and that the GFS forecast model was a possibility. We would continue to get constant weather updates from Predictwind, via our Iridium GO, to see if we could possibly keep going as time went on.
This is just a short, real world quick and dirty demonstration of how we use Predictwind on our IPad using an Iridium GO to get weather while at sea.

Oh hey, I remember this being briefly mentioned by Patrick. Your explanation is much more detailed. I'd love to see more of this type of stuff, maybe with some more video editing so you can show the other information you're looking at (and how you found it) when making these plans. IIRC, Patrick talked about several other sources of information that went into making this plan (anchorage suggestions, local information) but didn't really show them, or the predict wind, and neither of you said how you got the idea to stop there in the first place (just looking at the map?).
I know, good video editing takes forever. I have some of my own I need to do (Christmas mountain climbing in the Alps).
I've been doing old-fashioned paper navigating assignments for the past week getting ready for my SBF-See test at the end of this month. It's kinda neat, but even if all my navigation equipment broke it seems unlikely that I would use it. Either the conditions are good and I don't really need to check my position hourly just to take the shortest route back to port, or the conditions are bad and a short handed crew won't have a dedicated navigator taking bearings. What do you think? How often do you and Patrick use paper charts? What would you do if your plotters stopped working (and how many do you have? I think you have the tablet, laptop, smart phone, and ray marine plus another simple GPS device). Can you show us more what you normally do, and what you would do if the computer broke? I wish I had more training for modern navigation.
