This is a Paraíba tourmaline being shown by Gail Spann from the world-famous Spann Collection — and the colour is exactly why these stones have become so legendary.
Paraíba tourmalines are famous for their extraordinarily vivid blue to blue-green colours, caused primarily by copper in the crystal structure. That electric, almost neon saturation is what sets them apart from most other tourmalines and makes fine examples immediately recognisable.
The original material was discovered in Paraíba, Brazil, and similarly copper-bearing tourmalines have since been found elsewhere, including Mozambique and Nigeria.
But whatever the locality, seeing one this good in person is a very different experience from seeing photographs.
And getting to handle and discuss specimens from a collection of this calibre is always a privilege.
