Outer Banks Home Collapses: Why are they built on the ocean?
Descrição
Homes on the Outer Banks weren't built in the ocean. Built in the 70s and 80s, they had hundreds of yards of beach. Decades of erosion and compromised jetties have led to this crisis. Insurance won't cover losses until the property is totally destroyed. Journalist Sam Walker explains why homes are continuing to fall into the ocean along North Carolina's Outer Banks, including in Buxton. #OuterBanks #CoastalErosion #ClimateChange #BeachfrontProperty Original air date: 10/15/2025

Those rent for $6000-$12000 a week, the owners have profited well over the years.

In 1968 our family rented a small cottage called the “Austin” just over the dune in kitty hawk. Driving up and down the coast you could see large remnants of road washed to the side of the main road. My point is developers and politicians knew the problems well and still promoted unchecked building. As I recall jetty building was not allowed back then.

Doesn't matter building on the beaches should have never started

It enrages me that they built their house on the most storm-ravaged coastline in the USA and are now surprised at the inevitable. They've destroyed the dunes and the wildlife until nothing is left. Everyone from this area knows what the storms can do. Land was cheap and people were greedy. Nature is doing what it has always done here and will continue to do.

I remember an ole saying something about not building your house on the sand 🤔

These islands are constantly moving. I guess they didn’t think that would be an issue.

Those houses were not constructed in the 70s and 80s. Sorry.

Jetties just make it erode in other places. One part of the coast is lost and another is built up it’s been like this for centuries

I remember roadside billboards on Hatteras in the '70s, advertising "Lots For Sale! Ocean Access!" Now we know that meant that the ocean has access to YOU!
