MUTHARIKA REAFFIRMS PRESIDENTIAL AUTHORITY, DISMISSES CLAIMS OF PROXY GOVERNANCE

LILONGWE, MALAWI | 31 OCTOBER 2026

President Peter Mutharika has dismissed speculation that Malawi is being governed through a proxy, insisting that he remains firmly in control of the government.

Speaking upon his arrival from a private trip to South Africa, Mutharika said he maintained regular communication with Chief Secretary to the Government Justin Saidi and Cabinet ministers throughout his absence.

On the country's persistent fuel shortages, the President said fuel supplies were available at regional ports, including Tanga and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, as well as Nacala and Beira in Mozambique.

However, he attributed the continued shortages to logistical challenges affecting the transportation of fuel into Malawi.

Mutharika said his administration was working to address the transportation difficulties, while appealing to Malawians to exercise patience as efforts to improve fuel availability continue.
