The Munich Security Conference has opened amid visible strain between the United States and Europe.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for Washington and European allies to “repair and revive trans-Atlantic trust together.”

The gathering comes after a year of tension, including U.S. tariff threats against European allies and controversial comments about Greenland.

With officials from around 70 countries attending, discussions are expected to focus heavily on NATO, Ukraine, Gaza and Iran.

The tone set in Munich could shape how closely the U.S. and Europe coordinate on security in the months ahead.

In the Indian Ocean, Tropical Cyclone Gezani has caused major destruction in Madagascar.

Authorities report around 38 deaths, more than 12,000 people displaced, and tens of thousands of homes damaged or destroyed.

In the port city of Toamasina, officials say roughly three-quarters of infrastructure has been damaged.

The system is now moving toward Mozambique and could strengthen again over warm waters in the Mozambique Channel.

And Indonesia has begun training up to 8,000 troops for a proposed international peacekeeping force in Gaza.

It is the first firm troop commitment linked to President Trump’s postwar reconstruction plan.

The force would operate outside traditional United Nations structures, under a new “Board of Peace.”

The move signals how non-Western states may play a central role in shaping Gaza’s postwar security order.
