Mozambique to expand capacity of Mozambique-Zimbabwe pipeline
Descrição
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo and his Zimbabwean counterpart, Emmerson Mnngagwa, laid the foundation stone on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, of a pumping station in the town of Nhamatanda in central Mozambique, and a second one in the town of Messica near the border of neighboring Zimbabwe. Pumping stations are typically placed at 32 to 97 kilometers to boost an oil pipeline’s pressure back to normal to keep the oil flowing smoothly to its next destination. The two pumping stations will increase the annual capacity of the 294-kilometer CPMZ pipeline from 3 million to 5 million cubic meters by the end of 2027. The upgrade will allow the corridor to transport around two billion more liters of fuel annually. The CPMZ pipeline transports gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel from the Port of Beira to the Feruka petroleum hub in Zimbabwe. The project is the second expansion phase of the CPMZ pipeline, following phase one, which increased capacity from two million cubic meters annually to three million cubic meters annually in 2024. The Mozambique-Zimbabwe Pipeline Company (CPMZ), a Mozambican company that operates the pipeline, is currently conducting preliminary studies to assess the potential replacement of the existing 10-inch diameter pipeline with a larger one capable of transporting around 12 million cubic meters of fuel annually. CPMZ is also considering synchronizing the project with the Petrozim pipeline, which transports petroleum products from the Feruka petroleum hub to the Zimbabwean capital, Harare.
