Mozambique Prison Riot: Over 1500 Prisoners Escape, Dozens Killed Amid Unrest | Firstpost Africa
The situation in Mozambique is growing volatile with each passing day. In the latest, over 1500 prisoners have escaped from a high-security prison in Maputo on Christmas day. The police said that among those attempting to escape, 33 detainees were killed and 15 wounded in clashes with the prison staff. The police further said that a search operation, backed by the country’s army, led to the arrest of nearly 150 fugitives. The mass prison break comes as violence and protests have entered their third day. Demonstrations started after Mozambique’s Constitutional Council upheld the victory of the ruling Frelimo party’s candidate Daniel Chapo in the disputed October 9 elections. However, the results and the court’s ruling were rejected by opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, who has vowed to install himself as the President of Mozambique on January 15. This has raised the question of how the government would tackle the situation. Watch the video to learn more.
