MOZAMBIQUE IS THE NEW U.S-CHINA BATTLEGROUND

06/10/2026 · Frontline Africa

Descrição

Mozambique is sitting on close to 10% of the world's graphite, more than 5 trillion cubic metres of natural gas, and one of the most strategically located coastlines in southern Africa. And yet, while Washington is converting loans into equity stakes at the Balama mine, while Beijing is signing a "community with a shared future" agreement that bundles defence, geology, and processing into a single framework, and while CNPC quietly sits inside the so-called American Rovuma LNG project — Maputo is signing flowery joint statements without extracting the sovereignty premium that Niger and Burkina Faso have already shown is possible.
In this episode, we go past the headlines and into the arithmetic. We dissect what the April 21 joint statement actually committed Mozambique to. We follow the $46 million DFC equity move, the $200 million DH Mining processing plant at Nipepe, and the $30 billion Rovuma LNG consortium. We ask the uncomfortable question — when both superpowers are racing for stakes in your minerals, who is asking what is being bargained away in your name?
This is Frontline Africa. We centre Africa in global affairs with analysis, not emotion.

African countries have AES as a model to emulate but i don’t understand why some African presidents are still exporting raw materials instead of asserting their authority & force whenever wanna mine to build factories in their countries so they can pass the expertise and finally do the same on their nationalized mines

The President of Mozambique should have followed the pattern of Burkina Faso !!

It is mind-boggling how much wealth and influence are extracted from Africa, and are being leveraged against Africa's drive for self-renewal and complete sovereignty.

MZ has just survived a government overthrow operation and there's an EU (Rwanda) - US (Al Shabaab) proxy war going on in the North. At the same time the country is militarily and economically weak, hit by natural disasters like the recent flooding. The government is doing a great job in becoming close to China without too many demands. If allowed a chance to recover, it will become stronger in negotiations. For now it is forced into survival mode. Your analysis is focussed on the strenghts the country has, which is encouraging. The reality is that it first has to find a way out of being battered. It cannot afford to become the next Mali.

Let Mozambique slow down ,let them learn from the Sahel States and not allow itself to be stampeded into signing off their resources
