Prior to landfall, the Mozambican government and Red Cross volunteers evacuated some 30,000 people in communities where the concern of flooding, erosion and landslides was particularly high.
a storm surge was recorded between 16.4 and 23 feet (5 and 7 meters) high in areas located north of Pemba, Mozambique. Kenneth has already dropped over 9.8 inches (250 mm) of rainfall and the storm is expected to continue raining over Mozambique for the next several days.
The storm is expected to meander just inland after landfall for a day or more, keeping a portion of its circulation over water and thus allowing the storm to dump potentially catastrophic rainfall amounts over northern Mozambique.
Kenneth may even re-emerge over the ocean in the next 48 hours, allowing regeneration into a tropical cyclone and bringing renewed heavy rains to coastal Mozambique.
Officials are still evaluating the extent of the damage Mozambique, Tanzania and Malawi incurred as a result of Tropical Cyclone Kenneth.
