Mozambique Civil War (1977–1992): The True Cost of Africa's Forgotten Proxy Conflict
Descrição
Mozambique's independence in 1975 tragically led directly into a devastating 16-year civil war. This is the historical account of the conflict the world largely ignored, where geopolitical ambition determined the price of life.
The documentary traces the brutal struggle that pitted the Marxist FRELIMO government (backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba) against the anti-communist RENAMO rebels (covertly supported by Apartheid South Africa and Rhodesia). Over one million civilians were killed or displaced in a war fought with foreign weapons and strategies.
Key Themes and Turning Points:
The Geopolitical Proxy Game: We analyze how global powers and regional rivals exploited Mozambique, making it a critical chessboard in the final decades of the Cold War.
Systematic Sabotage and Terror: The conflict was defined by the destruction of infrastructure, including the vital Beira Corridor railway. We examine the use of terror tactics, including the widespread deployment of Child Soldiers and the burning of civilian centers.
The Great Famine: The war's chaos and economic collapse resulted in the devastating Famine of 1984–1985, which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
The Collapse of Order: We cover key political events, including the death of President Samora Machel in 1986, which fractured the FRELIMO leadership.
The Path to Peace: The film concludes with the eventual withdrawal of external support following the end of the Apartheid regime, leading to the Rome General Peace Accords (1992).
This is an examination of the political maneuvering and the tragic human reality of a nation that was nearly destroyed by forces beyond its borders.

As a Mozambican myself I must say that the video highlights a bit more the RENAMO’s brutality which are undeniable but doesn’t clearly states the reasons that actually took RENAMO to war. FRELIMO was and still is until today a very brutal regime that didn’t want a plural democracy , with different political parties and opinions . Many of oppositors were executed by FRELIMO , Joana Simeao , Simango and tens THOUSANDS of others. Even churches and priests were put in prison being accused of being against FRELIMO and many public executions were done in soccer stadiums by FRELIMO The M’thelela prison camp was brutal camp similar to the Stalin Gulags were many oppositors were took to there to be eaten by lions This is the type of brutality that RENAMO was fighting against
