U-S planes have flown over flood-stricken areas of Mozambique, beaming back live video images of marooned people and devastated terrain.
The information gathered by a specially equipped Hercules C-130 will be passed on to aid agencies in the Mozambican capital of Maputo.
Meanwhile, five other cargo planes left Hoedspruit air base in South Africa and ferried supplies to Maputo and the central Mozambican city of Beira, where most of the U-S relief effort is expected to be based.
U-S planes flew over flooded areas of Mozambique on Tuesday.
They beamed back live video images of marooned people and destroyed land.
The specially equipped Hercules C-130 will pass on the information it has gathered to aid agencies in the Mozambican capital, Maputo.
Meanwhile, five other cargo planes left Hoedspruit air base in South Africa and ferried supplies to Maputo and the central Mozambican city of Beira, where most of the U-S relief effort is expected to be based.
The aid supplies will be stockpiled there until helicopters can transport them to some of the southeast African nation's most isolated regions.
The floodwaters that swept across Mozambique a month ago and surged again two weeks ago have ebbed, leaving thousands dead and 1 (m) million people either homeless or in desperate need of help.
Aid agency officials expect the death toll to rise further as the waters recede.
Some 350 U-S troops are deployed in the region, with a further 250 expected later.

"The Americans are going to come in - the United States Air force. A special operations command is going to bring in 53 helicopters to help with the aid. To put out some food to the people who need it. We're going to set up a base here and do the best we can."
