Malawi, Mozambique evacuate citizens after attacks | DW News
Descrição
Hundreds of foreign workers are fleeing South Africa after anti-immigrant protests turned violent, with mobs attacking homes and forcing families to run for their lives. Many of those targeted - mostly from Malawi and Mozambique - say they were driven out overnight, some hiding in the bush before reaching safety. Several countries, including Malawi, Mozambique and Ghana, are now repatriating their citizens. As tensions rise, the violence is raising urgent questions about migrant safety and growing anti-immigrant sentiment in the region. DW Correspondent Dianne Hawker explains the complex political and economic issues at the heart of the tensions.

I'm South African. Our main problem is government corruption and incompetance. Illegal immigration is only a small part of it. Corruption and looting by African leaders is the cause.

This is what happens when government don't have any laws to protect their citizens like any normal government has.

I don’t think that’s the solution. Killing people , burning their homes and destroying their businesses is not the right way to go . Lawlessness is never an answer.

South Africa has over 70% youth unemployment. How can South Africa support millions of immigrants when it can't even support the majority of it's young people? People have lost hope that they will ever find work. That insecurity leads to fear and fear leads to hatred. The government is to blame of course, but it's easier to blame immigrants.

People's rage around the world is understandable under the general circumstances. However, people are channeling it towards fellow victims rather than the perpetrators of the real causes of their troubles. 😢

A country where the mob rules is a failed state.
