Malawi braces for arrival of powerful cyclone

People in #Malawi were bracing for the arrival of a powerful cyclone that already killed at least 11 people and caused widespread destruction in the #French #Indian Ocean territory of #Mayotte.
The French weather authority Météo-France said #Cyclone #Chido was the strongest to hit the island nation in over 90 years, bringing wind speeds of over 200kph.
The cyclone obliterated shantytowns and damaged government buildings while leaving some 15,000 homes without power.
Chido also affected the islands of #Comoros and #Madagascar before making landfall near Pemba, in northern Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province on Sunday.
According to the Malawi Red Cross Society, the cyclone is due to arrive in southern Malawi in the early hours of Monday 16 December.
