The Portuguese fled and independence finally came, he became president and launched radical socialist reforms. Schools opened, hospitals were built and the land returned to the farmers for a time. Hope grew, but he supported Nelson Mandela and the ANC. Weapons cross his border into South Africa and freedom fighters find refuge. Apartheid is shaking and Pretoria is planning in secret. On October 19, 1986, his presidential plane took off for a routine fight, false radio signals guided the plane towards the mountains. The plane crashes near the South African border and he dies instantly. The evidence points to Pretoria, but the sabotage officially remains a mystery. The President who defied, challenged apartheid was Samora Machel.
