Mauritius suspended flights and Madagascar braced for flooding and mudslides on Monday as Tropical Cyclone Freddy made its way across the Indian Ocean towards southeast Africa.

The storm, with wind gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour, poses a direct threat to island nations and Mozambique, officials said. It is equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane.

Video showed strong winds and waves hitting a beachfront hotel in Mauritius as water entered the hotel lobby as guests and staff looked on.

Authorities in Madagascar, about 1,130 km west of Mauritius. said they expected a direct attack later on Tuesday.

"Torrent rains... very high to huge seas... and a significant risk of coastal flooding are particularly fearsome in localities around the point of impact," Madagascar's meteorological service said.

Up to 2.2 million people, mostly in Madagascar, are feared to be affected by storms and floods, according to the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System.

Last year, scientists were able to show that climate change has worsened cyclones in southeast Africa, which is already a hotspot for tropical storms and cyclones.
