Jorge Amado and the Myth of the Brazilian Soul

07/09/2026 · Gabriela de Mendonça Gomes

Descrição

Mozambican author Mia Couto claimed that “Jorge Amado didn't write books, he wrote a country” How can someone write a country, especially one so large, complex, and diverse as Brazil?

In this video essay, I’ll take you through Jorge Amado’s life and some of his literary works to examine how fiction attempts to represent a country by way of one of its parts, namely Bahia, while uncovering how national images are constructed and mythologized within it and beyond. We discuss the pitfalls, problems, and points inevitably exist in the development of national myths, and how Jorge Amado became a primary mythmaker of Brazil and brasilidade for international audiences.

What book, film, or writer has most shaped your idea of Brazil?

Please make more videos on topics like these. Moving to the US, I lost a lot of the connection I had to Brazil and I’m struggling to find more video essays about Brazilian authors, media, culture and history especially in English since my Portuguese speaking ability is extremely basic.

Great and indepth discussion. I always had the impression that book's translations influenced much more ur view/understanding on the book and media. More so if same themes are ridden on the subtext. Very nice work! Good to see a br with that good of english content (and the relevante offshore history/context) for a change

i was reading the war of the saints (randomly picked it up at a second hand bookstore), but put it down. i like reading translated works, i do love many american and british authors but theres always something refreshing about international works. but i didn't have adequate context for war of the saints to really soak in. i think i'll try reading it again with my new knowledge! thank you for this video i'm glad i stumbled upon it

More Brazilian authors! I didn't get to answer your comment earlier asking for Rita Azevedo Gomes recommendations. You need A Vingança de Uma Mulher and A Portuguesa. Peak contemporary filmmaker just under the immediate radar. She needs more attention. Just as good as Pedro Costa, the one folks know. A Portuguesa has some of my favorite contemporary cinematography.

Italianos são latinos, os originais inclusive (ainda que a ideia tenha mudado ao longo do tempo) hahahaha ainda mais em 1962 qnd a review do NYT foi escrita.

Gilberto Freyre gets a lot of anachronistic critiques he does not deserve

8:56 Você tem o sotaque do sul do Brasil ou é só algo que vem ao mudar do inglês pro português?
