Tropical Storm Freddy has wreaked havoc for the second time in a month in southern Africa, leaving Malawi with a confirmed death toll of at least 190 people. The storm caused massive amounts of brown water to surge through neighborhoods, resulting in the destruction of many homes. The majority of the deaths, which include 36 from a landslide, occurred in Malawi's commercial hub, Blantyre. The storm has hit 10 southern districts hardest, prompting the government to declare a state of disaster in those areas. Rescue workers are struggling to cope with the overwhelming task of searching for survivors buried in mud, using shovels to dig through the debris. As of now, 37 people are still missing, while 584 have been reported injured and over 20,000 displaced. The government's disaster relief agency reported that the death toll had risen from 99 on Monday to the current figure of 190.
