Hurricane Eloise hit the Panhandle 45 years ago

I lived in Destin in 1975 I had just move on Okaloosa Island, paid 3 months rent and it hit, lost all that money, a homeless GI, Santa Rosa Blvd was underwater on the Gulf side where I stayed, I had to get the first sergeant to let me stay in the barracks for a whole week and of course the military had to clean the mess up. I remember McDonald's Golden Arches flying by the shelter, swing sets, dogs (I be dog gone) flying by, I remember the Ponderosa Steakhouse giving all the GIs credit (it hit a day before military payday). I still talk about that awful night, the Tennessee flood caused me to have a flashback to 1975. And that's the way it was' -Walter Cronkite
