Humpback Whale Season | Our Favourite Encounters | Bazaruto Archipelago

02/10/2026 · Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies (BCSS)

Descrição

We are privileged to witness East African sub population of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) slowly bouncing back. With the migratory peak in September, and given the population nearly doubled in size within the last decade, our interns and volunteers were lucky to enjoy this spectacular abundance with sometimes over 100 seen in a single day.

This video sums up our favourite encounters of the last few months. Make sure to watch until the end, as we saved the best for last!

ABOUT BCSS
The Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies is a research station located on Benguerra Island, in the Bazaruto Archipelago, in Mozambique. We run the WIO Ocean Observatory, focusing on seawater environmental monitoring, marine chemistry, marine animals spatial mapping, and pelagic migratory animal tagging. We also work on plastic recycling, permaculture, and community projects. We are open to researchers, volunteers, and guests who wish to learn more about marine life in the Indian Ocean or need to conduct fieldwork with professional logistic support.
