Huge Waves Hit Acapulco, Mexico: Category 5 Hurricane Polo Affecting the Pacific Coast

Hurricane Polo re-intensified to Category 5 early Thursday, September 24, off the Pacific coast of Mexico.


Waves ranging from 3.6 to 5.4 meters are being observed along the coastline stretching from Chiapas to Jalisco, and Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN) has warned that wave heights could reach 6 to 8 meters along the coasts of Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero.


In the port city of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, waves reached beachfront businesses. The ports of Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, and Lázaro Cárdenas were closed to all vessels. Up to 200 millimeters of rain is expected in parts of Guerrero, and flooding has already been reported in Acapulco.


Polo's wind speeds jumped from 72 to 240 kilometers per hour within 24 hours. Based on central pressure, it is the second-strongest hurricane on record in the Eastern Pacific, behind Hurricane Patricia in 2015.
