How Zambia Became a Base for most African Liberation

Zambia’s history of peace is deeper than the peaceful destination we know today. After gaining independence in 1964, Zambia became an important safe haven and base for liberation movements fighting colonial rule and apartheid across Southern Africa.

Lusaka the now capital city became a center of anti-colonial resistance, hosting movements linked to countries such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Angola and Mozambique.

The African National Congress of South Africa even operated its headquarters from Lusaka for part of the liberation struggle, while Zambia provided political, material and other forms of support to liberation movements in the region.

Zambia faced regional tensions, transport disruptions and security risks because of its position against colonial and white-minority rule. A country that had gained its own freedom also opened its doors to others still fighting for theirs.
