The rise of the Portuguese Empire was not primarily due to Spain, but rather a strategic response to the limitations of existing trade routes. In the 15th century, the spice trade, particularly with Asia, was dominated by Muslim and Venetian merchants through the overland and Mediterranean routes. These routes were not only expensive due to middlemen but also politically and militarily difficult for Christian Europe to access directly. As a result, Portugal sought to bypass these intermediaries by finding a direct sea route to the sources of spices in Asia. This ambition, supported by advances in navigation and shipbuilding, marked the beginning of the Portuguese maritime empire.
When Vasco da Gama brought pepper back from India, the price fell by two-thirds. When people salted meat they also added pepper to counteract the taste, so cheaper pepper ultimately led to greater meat consumption...
Another fact: The Portuguese Empire existed from the fall of Byzantine Empire to the fall of Soviet Union
Edit: Technically not empire after 1910, but what I interpret is the Portuguese Empire completely ended after handing Macau to China, so it means starting at 1910, Portugal is slowly shifting to democracy
We didn't accidentally discover Brazil in 1500. It was before the Treaty of Tordesillas was signed with Castilla (Spain), and kept it secret. Hence the demand to push the limit of Portugal's half of the world westwards 😉
1500 was the chosen date to officially "discover" it.
Fun fact: they didn’t think it was India like Spain thought about mexico, they discovered it because they got so off course one day they found some exotic logs and went “hmmm, wood is here, land nearby”
Still I honestly believe it was a horrible choice because while I do think Brazilian history is great as it currently is, and the country and its people are generally incredible and really cool and kind, there appears to be a small/moderately big community of Brazilian people that are extremely hostile towards Portugal and are attempting to claim creation/ownership of the Portuguese language. I find it odd cuz Latam countries don’t appear to do that with Spain
