He Freed Mozambique. 🇲🇿 The Portuguese forced his family to grow cotton instead of food. Took his land. His brother was killed in a South African mine. Samora Machel decided he would not accept any of it. They never told you what happened to him. Born 1933 in Chilembene Mozambique. Farmers in poverty under Portuguese colonial rule. He trained as a nurse — one of the only professions allowed to Black Mozambicans. Discovered Black nurses were paid a fraction of white nurses for the same work. That discovery finished his radicalisation. 1962 — joined FRELIMO. 1964 — led FRELIMO's first guerrilla attack against the Portuguese. He was at the front. Not from a distance. At the front. Commander in Chief by 1969. Eduardo Mondlane — FRELIMO's founder — assassinated 1969. They chose Machel. President of FRELIMO May 1970. Ten years against the Portuguese army — NATO member — aircraft artillery western backing. FRELIMO had the bush and the people and Samora Machel. The Portuguese could not hold. June 25 1975 — Mozambique was free. First president. Nationalised land healthcare education. Abolished private schools and clinics. Redistributed housing to Black Mozambicans. October 19 1986 — his plane crashed into a hillside in the Lebombo Mountains near the South African border. 25 dead. Apartheid South Africa's Foreign Minister Pik Botha was one of the first at the scene. Apartheid South Africa said — pilot error. Mozambique and the Soviet Union said — murder. South Africa's own Truth and Reconciliation Commission heard testimony that a South African Air Force sergeant saw a colleague building a mobile decoy radio beacon the month before the crash. It left the military base the weekend of the crash. Two pilots confirmed the navigation signal came on unusually early — pulling the plane off course toward the mountain. The investigation remains officially inconclusive today. He was 53 years old. They never told you what happened to Samora Machel.
