Forecasting the Madden-Julian Oscillation

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) might be the most important phenomenon you’ve never heard of. This eastward-moving pulse of heavy rainfall and strong winds travels around the equator and impacts everything from growing seasons across Asia to monsoons in India and West Africa. Researchers at the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences — including Simon de Szoeke — are trying to better forecast the MJO's genesis and understand its influence on weather and climate.
